Same Sex Weddings
Local MP Maria Miller who is the Women and Equalities Minister, has announced that the first same sex weddings in England and Wales will take place from Saturday 29th March 2014. This is several months earlier than originally anticipated.
Maria Miller said: “Marriage is one of our most important institutions, and from 29th March 2014 it will be open to everyone, irrespective of whether they fall in love with someone of the same sex or opposite sex”.
The government is also working to ensure that couples who have previously entered Civil Partnerships can convert these into marriages.
Family Law Partner Nick Massey-Chase comments that same sex couples often come to their relationship with very different financial assets.
“Just as it is important for heterosexual couples to consider a Pre-Nuptial Agreement often to “ring fence” their respective assets on marriage, so it will be equally important for same sex couples to consider this. They may well want to cement their union by marriage but keep their finances separate. The problem for them is that if the relationship breaks down some years later, the Court has extremely wide powers to transfer property and redistribute capital and the best way to ensure that each spouse keeps what they brought in to the marriage is to agree a Pre-Nuptial Agreement” said Nick.
